Subject:  Scheduled Maintenance Times and the Health of Tennis Association Members

Date:  November 5, 2008

There are several maintenance jobs that may seriously affect the health of players on the courts.  Many older players suffer from breathing disorders such as asthma.  Gasoline fumes; dust and toxic chemicals can all have an impact on senior players.  These cause problems including the following:

-The use of gasoline-powered equipment for trimming hedges, edging, cutting grass, and power blowers, when used in close proximity to players on the court, is a real health hazard.  The loud noise made by this equipment may cause hearing problems.

-The dispensing of chemicals to kill weeds and insects along with chemical fertilizers can also cause health problems.

-The spreading of chlorine on the courts to kill algae and fungus poses a problem.

-Since these are clay courts, the use of blowers causes dust to be blow around the court.

We realize that the above maintenance must be done, and we greatly appreciate the fine job done by the CA.  However, since most tennis matches are played in the morning, and only a few people use the courts during the afternoon. We request that the above-mentioned maintenance jobs be completed in the afternoon.  Although we have an informal agreement with the Maintenance Department in the South that Valley Crest will only work on the courts in the afternoon, they occasionally show up in the morning.

We, The Tennis Association Executive Board, formally request that having these maintenance jobs done during the afternoon will solve the problems listed above and greatly add to our health and welfare.

                                                                        Respectfully Submitted.
